Rising from the Ashes: Laura’s Tattoo Story

The accession of the phoenix is a mark of transformation. This is the top of Lauras tattoo.

Sometimes, a tattoo is more than just ink on skin—it’s a piece of someone’s soul, a testimony of survival, and a marker of transformation. Every client who walks through my door brings a story with them, and every tattoo I create carries meaning. But every so often, a story comes along that deeply resonates with me, weaving itself into my own heart as much as it does into my art. Laura’s story was one of those.

When I first met Laura, she was clear about what she was searching for. She didn’t just want a tattoo; she wanted someone to translate her journey into an image—a visual language of resilience. Her vision was simple yet powerful: she wanted to embody the idea of rising from the ashes, much like a Phoenix.

Behind that request was a storm of life changes. Laura had walked through fire. She had endured heartbreak, navigated the grief of letting go, and stood at the threshold of a completely new chapter. She had bought her first home. She was in the middle of a career change. And through all of that, she was rebuilding herself, piece by piece, with courage and self-love guiding her way forward.

Embracing the fire and morphing into the phoenix was a deposition of Laura in her journey of growth.

As we talked, it was clear that this tattoo wasn’t just a design. It was going to be her anthem. A reminder that no matter what had tried to break her, she rose higher, fiercer, and stronger than before.

Over the course of a year, we built a relationship. Our conversations weren’t just about placements and colors—they were about life, about choices, about the messy, beautiful process of becoming. We shared stories, tears, laughter, and ideas, shaping this tattoo into a piece of art that carried the same weight as Laura’s journey.

One of the most meaningful parts of the project was also covering up a tattoo from her past—a piece she had gotten with her former partner. That tattoo had become a scar, a reminder of something she no longer wanted to carry. Together, we decided to stretch her new piece, incorporating and transforming that old mark so it would no longer hold her down. By weaving it into the Phoenix, the memory shifted from something painful into a foundation for her transformation. It was no longer just about erasing the past, but about honoring the strength that grew out of it.

The coverup portion of Lauras leg is on the back of the calf at the widest point.

The finished tattoo is bold, fiery, and alive—a Phoenix unfurling its wings with intensity, every detail echoing Laura’s story of endurance and rebirth. But more than that, it’s a reminder that sometimes we have to lose ourselves to truly find who we are meant to be.

Working with Laura reminded me why I do what I do. Tattooing is more than art. It’s connection. It’s healing. It’s storytelling with skin as the canvas and life as the ink. Every time I pick up my machine, I know I’m not just making something beautiful—I’m helping someone write their history, declare their truth, and step into their power.

Laura’s Phoenix is one of those tattoos that I’ll never forget. It’s not just her story—it became mine, too. A reminder to me, as much as to her, that no matter what chaos life throws at us, we always have the chance to rise again.

There is also another older tattoo coverup in this space of the tattoo. The intention of this depiction was to ‘embrace the changes' depicted as fire.

That’s the beauty of tattooing. It’s not about trends or fleeting designs. It’s about creating something eternal—an anchor, a declaration, a personal testimony. For Laura, it was about reclaiming her body, her memories, and her strength. For me, it was an honor to walk with her through that process and leave a piece of her journey etched in art.

Because sometimes, a tattoo is not just a tattoo—it’s a rebirth.
